The Geek Beat: The Great Unknown

Let me preface this piece by stating that I like Chris Evans, and I think he’ll make a fine Captain America. Out of all the names they were tossing around, he’s by far the best. But I can’t help but wonder what might have been, and why Marvel suddenly decided to play it so safe. And yes, Evans is a safe pick. He’s a name, though not a big one. He’s talented and charismatic, but one could say (and I don’t mean this to be critical at all) that he’s inoffensively so. We know we’re not going to get a wooden performance, and we know he’s not going to veer into weird Nicolas Cage territory. It’s safe.

And I have no problem with caution. I would rather have Marvel go with something “obvious” if it makes for a good movie instead of casting the latest teen sensation, or trying so hard to be edgy that they lose sight of who the character is. To me, John Krasinski was that Michael Keaton kind of pick, and I’m glad they sidestepped it. (Hey, that’s no knock on those pieces. I love writing those pieces too!) Gone are the days when you’d go see the new Harrison Ford movie because oh my gosh, it was the new Harrison Ford movie and you knew your money would be well spent. But now! There’s an interesting little (and I do mean little) trend going on in genre / geek movies and television right now. Actually, I should say it’s been going on since March 2007, but it seems to be debating whether to sputter itself out or not. The Geek Beat: Why We Do What We Do

It’s the last column of 2009, and one that follows on a maelstrom of commentary. I don’t think I received a single comment or e-mail that didn’t care intensely about Avatar one way or another. It’s been fascinating and frightening to experience.

I feel as though movie fandom has taken a very extreme turn. Drew McWeeny noted back in May that it took a turn for the worse in 1999 after Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. “Fandom has changed profoundly in the last ten years, and it would be hard to argue that it’s been for the better. The Geek Beat: Rated M For Mature

Due to it being a quiet news week thus far, I decided it might be fun to discuss a little ruckus that’s been brewing in Lexington, Kentucky. Two library workers became obsessed with Alan Moore, and not in the way familiar to those who found him via Swamp Thing or Watchmen. It seems the Jessamine County library got a copy of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Volume IV: Black Dossier as many self-respecting libraries have. Employees Sharon Cook and Beth Boisvert saw it (it’s not clear how) and decided it was unfit for public consumption.

After challenging its shelf place and failing, they debated “spilling tea on it” before taking the less destructive measure of checking the book out. Using her employee privileges, Cook discovered the Moore fan was an 11-year-old girl (way to go!) and took matters into her own hands. She took the patron’s hold off.
