Barry Pepper Also Has Some ‘True Grit’

Jokes were flying on Oscar night that you might see the Coen Bros’ True Grit taking home some nominations or some gold in 2011, particularly since Jeff Bridges is going into such a big role when he’s so hot off a win. But with the Coen Bros, sometimes it’s the supporting players that make the biggest impact, and they’ve recruited one of the best “Oh, that guy!” actors around. According to Variety, Barry Pepper has joined the cast as Lucky Ned Pepper. I hope he’s prepared for a million and a half questions and jokes that snark on the shared surname.

Lucky Ned Pepper heads up a gang of outlaws, and comes up against Rooster Cogburn, Texas Ranger La Boeuf, and Mattie Ross when he aligns himself with Tom Chaney. Chaney is being hunted by the oddball company, and to get to him, they have to exchange gunfire with Pepper. Things get complicated, ugly, and dangerous as you well remember from the 1969 original. Pepper was played by Robert Duvall the first time around. It’s probably the closest the Coens have stuck to the original casting, as Pepper’s acting style and looks are quite similar to Duvall’s.

Pepper is one of those actors who has been toiling in supporting roles for years. He’s always good, but he’s never managed to crack into mainstream recognition. True Grit might just be the movie that finally pushes him into the public’s awareness, so he’s no longer “That guy!”, he’ll be Barry Pepper, the man who survived the mess that was Battlefield Earth. I think he’s due for a little luck after that, don’t you?

‘The Big Lebowski’ As Penned By William Shakespeare

Have you ever wondered what The Big Lebowski would have sounded like if it had been performed at The Rose or The Globe? If not, you should have. Fan Made: The Coen Bros Cross Stitch

Nothing says the Coen Bros like cross-stitch — and not just because of that famous Fargo poster. I’m not surprised their retro stylings have inspired fans to pay homage by picking up the needle, and engaging in some antique art forms.

The above was actually found by Scott Weinberg, who sent it to me when I pitched yesterday’s Big Lebowski discussion to him. It comes by way of Flickr and was made by a very talented individual known only to us as “Gillyweed25.” She created it using an antique French cross stitch pattern … and I admire how the flowers not only tie into the design, but also censor it for sensitive viewers. It’s so retro and calm, and would really tie a room together.

And speaking of that homely Fargo poster, it too has been recreated by a blogger named Spazzmanda, who had her creation featured on Craftzine. It’s spot on, right down to the border.

I haven’t come across anything from Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossing, or O Brother Where Art Thou yet. So maybe I’ll practice my own needlework skills by stitching “I must have been an antelope or an ibex” onto a pillow.

The Coen Bros Remaking ‘True Grit’

Fill your hands you … well, you know the line. You probably know this movie line by line, and your heart still leaps to see Rooster Cogburn flip that Winchester. So the news that True Grit is getting remade by Joel and Ethan Coen will either fill you with rage, excitement, or put you squarely into Swiss territory.

According to Variety, the Coen Bros aren’t aiming for a traditional remake — they want to return to the original Charles Portis novel, and make a more faithful adaptation. Their version will be told from Mattie’s point of view, as the original novel is, and keep Cogburn as a side player. The Coens will undoubtedly amp up the Biblical tone and include the darker elements … like what really happens to her after the snakebite.

Plans to remake True Grit have apparently been in the works for some time — it originally begun at DreamWorks, but was left behind when Steven Spielberg and his shingle split with Paramount. Undaunted by the task, the Coens are tackling it before their adaptation of Michael Chabon’s The Yiddish Policeman’s Union.

So, what else can you say? It’s the Coen Bros, who will undoubtedly tackle a period Western as ably as they did a modern, revisionist one. On the other hand, it’s John Wayne. It’s the movie he won his only Oscar for. Do you dare touch it? I’m veering somewhere between neutral and excited myself, while simultaneously praying I don’t live long enough to see anyone remake The Outlaw Josey Wales.

*By the way, did you know True Grit’s screenwriter, Marguerite Roberts, was from Colorado — my home state. It was also filmed here. I honestly never knew this. I feel something akin to civic pride now.
