There’s no getting around it: Snake Plissken is a badass. It even says so in his contract. In John Carpenter’s “Escape from New York,” Kurt Russell put forth a truly memorable performance as the eyepatch-wearing former Army lieutenant charged with rescuing the U.S. President from the self-appointed Duke of New York (Isaac Hayes). So iconic was the role that the star of the coming remake is going to have his work cut out for him in matching it.
Fortunately, there are some very talented performers out there. Among them are a select few who possess the chops to strike the right balance between menacing badass and one-liner spouting… something. Who are they? Hit the jump and see for yourself. Dwayne Johnson
If there’s anyone who can mix menace with wisecracks, it’s Dwayne Johnson, the wrestler formerly known as The Rock. His trademark arched eyebrow might not play so well with the eyepatch, but maybe it’s time for Johnson to show the world that he’s more than just a dashing dude who can do the Spock eyebrow raise. Besides, I think we can all agree that the poor guy needs some image rehabilitation after “The Tooth Fairy.” Posters read “You can’t handle the tooth.” No one could, Dwayne… no one could.
Karl Urban
Karl Urban might strike you as an unusual choice, but that’s just because you’re crazy. He recited DeForest Kelley’s classic “Star Trek” one-liners last year like he was born to speak them, imitating the original Dr. McCoy’s drawl perfectly. And his badass credentials need little explanation. He was fine as John Grimm in “Doom” and Vaako in “The Chronicles of Riddick,” two so-so movies, but he truly shined as Rohan rider Eomer in the second and third “Lord of the Rings” films. Just give him an eyepatch and point him in the direction of the bad guys… Urban will take care of the rest.
Quinton Jackson
This one requires a little bit of imagination. Obviously, Quinton Jackson bears very little resemblance to Kurt Russell. But he’ll be seen this summer as B.A. Baracus in the big screen adaptation of “The A-Team.” You want to talk about mixing menace and comedy? Mr. T is practically a prototype for that sort of character. If Jackson can pull off a slightly less lovable Baracus than T did in the ’80s, I’ll have no doubt that he could deliver a fresh, script-flipping take on Snake Plissken as well.
Sam Worthington
“Avatar” star Sam Worthington has rapidly turned into the go-to guy for all of Hollywood’s action flick casting rumors. Between his trip to Pandora and his redemptive killer robot in “Terminator Salvation,” not to mention his coming turn as Perseus in “Clash of the Titans,” he’s certainly got the background. He’ll be an obvious short-list choice for the role whenever casting begins though, to be honest, I’m not certain he’s the right fit for Plissken.
Tom Hardy
Tom Hardy will show his action chops to the world soon enough in “Mad Max: Fury Road.” But anyone who saw “Bronson” last year understands why he’d be perfect for Plissken. The title character in last year’s UK import is based on the real-life criminal Charlie Bronson, a man who has been incarcerated for most of his life. Hardy’s portrayal — basically a one-man show — was exceptional, a balanced mix of rational villainy and nuthouse crazy comedy. He was the right choice for Mel Gibson’s Max Rockatansky and he’d be the right choice for Plissken as well.
Kiefer Sutherland
If there’s any better candidate than Tom Hardy, it’s “24” and “Flatliners”(!!!) star Kiefer Sutherland. In many ways, TV’s Jack Bauer already channels some of Kurt Russell’s best, most scene-chewing roles. It would be no jump whatsoever for Sutherland to don an eyepatch and do his Jack Bauer thing in a future-world prison situated on Manhattan Island. Seriously New Line… call up Sutherland and make this happen.
