Scenes We Love: L.A. Confidential (Again!)

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The time of year when I watch L.A. Confidential a dozen times because “It’s Christmassy!”, complain that it didn’t win Best Picture, and fall in love with Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce all over again. So, today’s Scene We Love is indeed a scene we all love: “She is Lana Turner.”

It’s also good timing, as this week we finally get to see a glimpse of Pearce in The Road. Olivia Wilde Doesn’t Tell Us Much About ‘The Next Three Days,’ Looks Fantastic Doing It

While Olivia Wilde was making the media rounds last Friday, checking in on David Letterman the day after his extortion/infidelity clusterfrak and stopping by MTV News HQ for a chat, she was also getting ready to begin filming “The Next Three Days” in Pittsburgh.

Thankfully for everyone involved, our own Josh Horowitz had no embarrassing personal revelations to make during his time with Olivia, and the two ended up touching on her upcoming film role. Mind you, she didn’t tell us much – or anything, really, beyond what has popped up in the trades over the past several months. But she’ll have a little help from Neeson, who plays an ex-con who has broken out of prison multiple times, wrote a how-to guide about it, and offers his assistance to Crowe. The role is being described as “cameo in nature” which suggests Neeson might be narrating his own Dummy’s Guide to Escaping From Prison, or is at least available to Crowe by cell phone to work out the tougher bits.

Filming just started on Days in Pittsburgh last Friday, and wraps on December 12. Russell Crowe Spends ‘The Next Three Days’ With Paul Haggis

Russell CroweThere isn’t a Russell Crowe movie that I won’t watch. I confess to not only owning “A Good Year” but watching it multiple times simply because I occasionally need a trip to the French wine-country with a stern Australian. I’ve already pre-bought my ticket to Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood,” and now I can check the calender days off for Crowe’s latest, “The Next Three Days.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Days” actually has Crowe taking a break from Universal and his director friend Scott. The actor will team up with Paul Haggis (”Crash”) and Lionsgate for this remake of the 2008 French thriller “Pour Elle.”

The story follow a married couple who find their happy lives turned upside down when the wife is imprisoned for murder. Not only does her husband believe her claims of innocence, he concocts a plan to break her out of prison. Forget chocolates and red roses… that’s love! It’s also the perfect role for a tough guy like Crowe, who shines when he gets to play the anguished action hero.

Filming is scheduled to begin in September, meaning Crowe will be fresh off of “Robin Hood” and in full fighting form. Now if you’ll excuse me, I think it’s time to watch “The Quick and the Dead” again…

Are there still Russell Crowe fans out there, or have his phone-throwing ways scared audiences off? Do you think this is a good role for him? Or have you written it off as another unnecessary foreign remake?

More ‘Master and Commander’? Aye-Aye, Captain!

I know from comments on past posts that I’m not the only moviegoer desperate for more of Captain Jack Aubrey. I’ll go on record and say that as much as I enjoyed Captain Jack Sparrow, I’d much sooner take another journey with Aubrey and Stephen Maturin over a fourth Pirates.

There’s a glimmer of hope now, as Russell Crowe talked to USA Today and said that very early talks were underway for a new Master and Commander installment. A script based on Patrick O’Brian’s The Reverse of the Medal has been written, and like Far Side of the World, it’s a combination of several different stories. Negotiations are currently underway to obtain the rights, but USA Today doesn’t specify if they’ve lapsed, or if Fox lacks the neccessary books of the 20 volume series.

Crowe said that “there’s still a long way to go,” and that it’s one of several projects he’s considering, so we can’t hold our breath. Medal would be quite the follow-up, since it would be an older Aubrey than we met before, and one who is embroiled in fraud charges and dealing with illegitimate offspring. It would also introduce that other side of Maturin, one that’s distinctly different from his naturalist ways. I hope it happens, though. It would be a good time on land and sea for all!
