John Belushi Biopic Coming From Todd Phillips, So MTV Does A Little Armchair Casting

The big movie news today is that “The Hangover” director Todd Phillips is developing a biopic chronicling the too-short life of comedian and actor John Belushi. The portly “Saturday Night Live” vet passed away in 1982, at the age of 33, the victim of a drug overdose. In spite of his abbreviated career, Belushi held starring roles in what many consider to be two of the greatest comedies in the history of film: “Blues Brothers” and “Animal House.”

Now Phillips, as producer, and screenwriter Steven Conrad are set to bring the tragic story to the big screen. Success hinges entirely on the proper casting of the Belushi role. Some names are already being tossed around, but I’ve got a few suggestions of my own. Share your thoughts on these and any other likely candidates in the comments section after the jump.

Jonah Hill
Jonah Hill is a fine comedic performer who, thanks to “Moneyball,” will soon be taking his first steps in the world of more mature roles. Belushi, as funny as he was, is a complex character. It’s going to take someone with more than a sizable gut and a knack for making people laugh to do right by this role. Hill could be that someone.

Zach Galifianakis
There’s not denying that Zach Galifianakis’ star is burning brightly right now. And he’s got that connection with Phillips after “The Hangover” and the upcoming “Due Date.” There are wigs and stylists to give him the right hair, and latex to shape up his face a bit. I just wonder if he has the dark side that will be necessary to really capture Belushi. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s upcoming “It’s A Funny Kind of Story” ought to be a good indicator; if the “Half-Nelson” filmmakers can bring him to deliver a more nuanced, less over-the-top performance, he could easily become a frontrunner for the role.

Clark Duke
“Hot Tub Time Machine” star Clark Duke is the longshot of the list. He’s young. Unproven. His roles in flicks like “Time Machine” and “Kick-Ass,” as well as his role on the TV series “Greek,” haven’t been particularly demanding in a dramatic sense. But sometimes the young up-and-comer pans out as the right choice. Could Phillips pin his movie’s success to Duke? You never know, but he’ll have some other strong contenders to beat out if he makes the short list.

Seth Rogen
Seth Rogen is probably the most multi-faceted performer on this list from a dramatic standpoint. Going all the way back to “Freaks and Geeks,” he’s proven himself talented at delivering straight-up comedy alongside complex emotions. He exists more in the Judd Apatow camp than the Phillips, but this could be the perfect role for him to cross over with. It also helps that, with a little wig work, he bears no small resemblance to the late comedian.

Artie Lange
I take it back, my comment about Duke being the longshot. That dubious honor really belongs to Artie Lange, the troubled comedian and “Howard Stern Show” radio personality. What Lange really has going for him as far as this role goes is personal experience. Like Belushi, Lange is dogged by many demons. If he can channel that humanity, the facets of his life that mirror Belushi’s, the result could rival the best of what biopics have offered. Unfortunately, as is evidenced frequently on the radio, Lange is still wrestling with his demons. Sadly, it would be an incredible risk to hand such an important role to a loose cannon like him.

Bobby Moynihan
If there’s any name on this list that you’re confused about, it’s Bobby Moynihan. Who is this guy? He’s a current cast member on “Saturday Night Live” who bears no small resemblance to Belushi. He’s got virtually no big screen experience and no starring roles. To go from contributing to a weekly sketch comedy show to leading a blockbuster biopic… that’s a hard one to swallow. He’s hard not to at least consider though, given his resemblance to the subject.

Howard Replaces Elfman for ‘Green Hornet’ Score

Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry’s attempt to bring The Green Hornet to a new generation has been fraught with delays, disasters, and apathetic reactions. We thought this might be over when the film’s trailer debuted a short time ago, but apparently this production will be surrounded with turmoil until it hits theater screens in January (and maybe afterward — when the finger-pointing starts should it underperform at the box office … ).

The latest calamity to hit the film involves the title’s soundtrack. Danny Elfman had been tapped to handle the scoring duties for the updated comic tale, but that is apparently no longer the case. A source told Playlist that Elfman has “scheduling conflicts” that are forcing him to bow out of the project. Their source also indicates that James Newton Howard is in talks to take over the duties on Michel Gondry’s film.

Truthfully, as Playlist points out, this is probably a good thing. There are two things that seem to be true in Hollywood — you can “fail upwards” and you can make an entire career out of a few good pieces of work. Elfman has done the latter — living off the reputation he earned for work from over a decade ago. James Newton Howard, meanwhile, has a pedigree that includes both of Christopher Nolan’s Batman films and some other impressive titles.

I’m fine with the decision to replace Elfman, but I can’t shake the feeling that The Green Hornet is going to be a huge disaster. Anyone with me, or are you guys optimistic that this will somehow turn out decent despite the issues its encountered?

Regular Cinematical readers will remember that I’ve famously said I can never watch Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust thanks to violence it commits against animals, but I have definitely seen my share of gross, weird, and deeply disturbing movies. Until recently, the most f*cked up thing I’ve ever watched is probably Jorg Buttgereit’s 1987 film Nekromantik, which climaxes – literally – with a guy stabbing himself to death as he ejaculates blood. But Sunday’s offerings at Screamfest offered a new contender in this dubious competition to show audiences the depths of human depravity: specifically, The Human Centipede is precisely the kind of cult sensation that earns immortality on the merits of its gobsmacking levels of gore, despite the fact that all in all it’s really not a very good film.

Dieter Laser stars as Dr. Heiter, a reclusive German surgeon who specializes in separating conjoined twins. Pining for the loss of his beloved 3-dog – in fact, rottweilers that he surgically attached end-to-end – Heiter recruits a series of unwitting victims, including a trucker, two American tourists (Ashley C. Williams and Ashlynn Yennie), and a Japanese playboy (Akihiro Kitamura), for his latest experiment. But when his victims give him more trouble than he expects – including unwanted attention from the authorities – Dr. Heiter is forced to decide whether to abandon his latest project, or protect it from the outside world – with their and his very lives, if necessary.

Films We Want Right Now: Andrew Niccol’s ‘I’m Mortal’

I hate to come across as hyperbolic from a mere plot description. I really do. The thing is, I spend an awful lot of time reading about sci-fi movie news, about all film’s major and minor in the production pipeline. Accordingly I tend to get excited from time to time about certain announcements, be they directorial attachments or mere concepts. Jim Carrey, Kate Hudson And Jennifer Garner To Carve Up Some ‘Butter’

You can learn some pretty neat things by way of movie news. For instance, I knew nothing about butter sculptures until reading about a new film titled “Butter,” which is set in this world of dairy art, an American tradition going back at least to the 19th century. According to Variety, Jennifer Garner, who is also producing the comedy, will co-star as an ambitious butter sculptress from the Midwest who goes up against a 12-year-old newbie carver in a local contest.

The young African-American challenger has not yet been cast, but Vulture has learned both Jim Carrey and Kate Hudson are in talks to join the film. Carrey would reportedly play Garner’s character’s husband, described as a “philandering, Bill Clinton-esque repeat sculpting champion.” Oh yeah, and that Presidential comparison fits because apparently “Butter” is really about the 2008 primary race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Hudson’s role would be that of a kind of Monica Lewinsky “paramour.”

The script for “Butter” was on the 2008 Black List, which spotlights the year’s best unproduced screenplays. It is also already an award-winner, having garnered writer Jason A. Micallef a Nichols Fellowship. Yet while it seems like a clever concept on paper, I’m not sure The Weinstein Co. will sell the film on its metaphoric genius. Not even the Variety report mentions the plot parallels.

So there are sure to be plenty of red state moviegoers who simply see the movie because they’re fans of the art of butter carving. It’s not like Carrey will be as obvious a Clinton figure as John Travolta’s Jack Stanton in “Primary Colors” or as literal as Dennis Quaid’s Bill Clinton in the upcoming film The Special Relationship.”

“She’s Out of My League” director Jim Field Smith will be at the helm of “Butter” when the movie begins shooting next month in Louisiana.

Will you be seeing “Butter” for the sculpting or the subtext? Does the knowledge that it’s a political metaphor make you any less interested in the film?

Meet Blackbeard, The Villain Of ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Played By Ian McShane

DESCThe casting of Ian McShane as Blackbeard in Rob Marshall’sPirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is easily one of the greatest movie news stories of the week. McShane is a powerful actor and his scenes opposite Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and the rest of the “Pirates” cast are sure to be a major draw of the film. On top of that, McShane is assuming an iconic role in Blackbeard, a fierce pirate with a lot of interest, name recognition and history – despite boasting a short and bloody lifespan.

While the actor is guaranteed to bring his own signature spin to the role, there are a few essential facts about Blackbeard that you might care to know before the fourth “Pirates” installment sails into theaters.

Enigmatic Origins: Clearly, Blackbeard wasn’t born as Blackbeard. Most historians refer to him as Edward Teach, though even his last name is subject to some debate. Additionally, his precise date of birth remains unknown, though it’s estimated that he was born around 1680. In fact, few details about Blackbeard are known prior to his emergence as a powerful pirate in 1717 – just one year before his death.

Lady of the Seas: Captains Jack Sparrow and Barbossa shared a noted rivalry over the ownership of the Black Pearl, and why shouldn’t they – after all, what’s a fierce pirate without a ship to call his own? Blackbeard is no exception, having plundered and pillaged on the high seas by way of the Queen Anne’s Revenge, a French ship that Blackbeard helped capture alongside his onetime ally Benjamin Hornigold in 1717.

A Warrior’s Death: Unfortunately, the Queen Anne’s reign was short-lived, as was its master’s. In 1718, Blackbeard ran the ship aground in the West Indies. He himself died shortly thereafter, beheaded in the thick of battle against Robert Maynard and his fellow sailors, ending the pirate’s career barely after it began.

Lingering Ghosts: Despite Blackbeard’s decisively brief time sailing the Caribbean waters, his presence continued to haunt his fellow seamen – several ghost stories state that after his death, Blackbeard continued to wander the seas in search of his severed head. I don’t put too much stock into the supernatural, but that’s certainly something that Jack Sparrow might want to watch out for.

Turning the Tides: Short though his career was, Blackbeard continues to be an icon in pirate lore and fiction – not the least of which is his role in Tim Powers’ novel “On Stranger Tides,” the book that the upcoming “Pirates of the Caribbean” film is based upon. The film won’t necessarily follow Blackbeard’s historical path, but with McShane at the helm, we’re bound to see a menacing pirate nonetheless.

Tell us what you think of Blackbeard in the comments section and on Twitter!
