What do you do when the gravy train reaches the terminal? With no more Harry Potter paychecks on the way for Daniel Radcliffe after wrapping production on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the young actor is determined to keep his toes in the water and has been announced today as the star of Hammer Films production The Woman in Black.
The gothic thriller, based on the novel by Susan Hill, will be directed by Eden Lake-helmer James Watkins and comes from a script by the brilliant Jane Goldman, who wrote Stardust and Kick-Ass and is currently hard at work on X-Men: First Class.
Radcliffe will play a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps, who finds himself in a remote part of Britain to deal with a recently deceased client’s paperwork. While working in the old house he starts experiencing horrific hauntings by the ghost of a scorned woman out for vengeance.

This is not really the kind of breaking news I’d expect from Cannes, although it’s no less welcome for that. The House of Hammer will be breaking through to audiences in three glorious dimensions with its upcoming release, The Woman in Black. Based on the gothic horror novel by award-winning author Susan Hill, The Woman in Black is being adapted by the convention-flaunting, flame-haired scribe Jane Goldman, who co-wrote the screenplay for Kick-Ass with director Matthew Vaughn. Goldman is huddling up again with Vaughn for X-Men: First Class script, as well, according to SuperHeroHype, via her hubby’s Tweets. Exec producer Guy East said that the film will be shot in 3D – none of this retrofitting nonsense, thank you. As reported by Alison Nastasi at Horror Squad earlier this year, Eden Lake’s James Watkins will be directing.
This marks yet another departure from Hammer’s history as a purveyor of campy horror goodness, from countless Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing flicks to vampy lesbian films like The Vampire Lovers and even a dip into the “cave woman” genre. (Yes, there’s a genre dedicated to cave women.) Hammer’s newest features are looking more swanky, though. Horror lovers everywhere (myself included) let out a collective yawp of anger when it was announced that Let the Right One In was getting remade for US audiences as Let Me In, but as more news and images trickle out about the remake starring Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road), the better it sounds.

Right off the bat, it should be noted: Neil Marshall did not direct the sequel. That’s not to say anything nasty or negative about The Descent: Part 2, but if you’re looking for a reason to whine about how “It’ll never be as good as the first one,” then there you go.
Beyond that, however, my anticipation of this sequel just got elevated by this brand-new trailer clip the new trailer clip that Lionsgate just yanked from YouTube, darnit, although this site seems to still have it posted. The director is first-timer Jon Harris, who worked as editor on several films (including the very well-cut Eden Lake), and one can’t help but feel for the guy. His first big feature and everyone’s already whining about the absence of Neil Marshall. Also, one of the credited screenwriters is James Watkins, he of the underrated My Little Eye and (also) Eden Lake.

No matter what I say, I think most of us out there are never going to believe that the follow-up to Neil Marshall’s The Descent could ever live up to the original. But, these latest stills from the sequel certainly make me feel a little better about the whole idea — well, that and the fact that Marshall acted as a ‘hands-on’ producer for the flick. Still photographer Ollie Upton recently released a whole whack of still photographs from the flick on his website (check them out below) and it looks like things certainly haven’t gotten any better for our heroine since we last saw her.
James Watkins‘ (My Little Eye) script centers on Sarah Carter (Shauna Macdonald), who has emerged from the Appalachian cave covered in her friend’s blood, and borderline catatonic. When she is forced to go back down in the caves to help locate her missing companions, she is haunted by visions of what had happened, and as the rescue party ventures further into the caves, Sarah starts to lose her grip on reality. Of course, you can count on the ‘Crawlers’ making another appearance, and from then on you know things are going to go bad … very, very, bad.
The Descent: Part 2 will be released in the UK on May 15th, but so far there have been no dates announced for North America. Stay tuned to Cinematical for any updates on a US release, otherwise, those of us on this side of the pond might have to wait for the DVD.
