‘The Karate Kid’ Kung Fu Chops The Weekend And Jaden Smith Is A Star… So Now What?

He’s only 11 years old — 12, in July — and yet Jaden Smith, the son of Hollywood couple Will and Jada, has already gotten star billing in two big ticket movies: “The Pursuit of Happyness,” with his dad, in 2006; and “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” with Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly, in 2008. This weekend, young Jaden opened his first summer blockbuster, starring alongside Jackie Chan in a revival of the ’80s classic, “The Karate Kid.” Boy oh boy did he open it… “Kid” premiered to a weekend box office total of $56 million, more than doubling what fellow opener (and ’80s revival) “The A-Team” took in.

The coming weeks will paint a better picture of course, but it’s fair to say that “The Karate Kid” is on track to become this year’s “The Blind Side,” last year’s Sandra Bullock-starring drama which turned into a surprise box office giant. Whatever it is that draws crowds to Jaden’s kung fu stylings, it’s clearly working. Now the young actor finds himself at a crossroads: how to best leverage this newfound success to benefit his burgeoning career.

For now, Jaden has just one follow-up in the works: family fantasy/adventure flick “Amulet,” in which he will star alongside his real-life sister Willow. Unsurprisingly, that movie is being produced by papa Will’s Overbook Entertainment. But what else could there be for young Jaden?

Many people have pointed out the boy’s resemblance to Huey Freeman, star of the comic strip-turned-hit animated series “The Boondocks.” No one has ever mentioned any plans to further adapt the source material into a movie, live-action or otherwise, but best to start planning for it now before Jaden gets too old for the part.

Another kid-heavy franchise that has long-term potential kicks off next year with the film adaptation of “I Am Number Four.” The two child aliens in that first movie have already been cast, but more will be revealed as the series progresses. The first book is completed and hits stores on August 17. It’s tough to say at this point how future books will introduce the other alien children, but it’s a stellar read and will likely breed a great film franchise. Jaden would do well to align his star to this one, should the opportunity arise.

Of course, it would be silly to forget that Jaden has a very powerful father in Hollywood. Will Smith is a man who opens his own movies. Sure, Jaden is too young for his dad to start passing the torch on some of his much-loved characters. But surely there’s room for the child actor to appear with his father in upcoming sequels like “Men in Black III” and “Bad Boys 3.” Not to mention the long-hoped-for “Independence Day” sequel.

How about one more? With all of the hubbub lately about Donald Glover and “Spider-Man,” and the larger fracas its raised over the idea of an African-American Spidey, why not go full reboot and frame the new webhead as super-powered elementary school student?

Okay… that one’s pushing it.

Now, we’ve seen the first trailer and only five months remain until release, but even the film’s new Mr. Miyagi isn’t quite sure what to call it.

“We just finished the movie, ‘Karate Kid,’” Jackie Chan told me Wednesday at the People’s Choice Awards. “Um, the ‘Kung Fu Kid.’”

Say what? Over the course of the film’s shooting, rumors had leaked that since the film is set in China, the title would reference Kung Fu (a Chinese discipline) instead of karate (a Japanese form of martial arts). But the recent first trailer for the movie ended with a title card that read “The Karate Kid.” Which seems odd, since technically Jaden Smith won’t be doing any karate in the movie.

“I don’t know [what it’s going to be called],” Chan admitted of the film, which is due to hit theaters in June. “Probably ‘Kung Fu Kid’ in China and ‘Karate Kid’ in America. Maybe a different title? I don’t know. But mostly we’ve called it ‘The Kung Fu Kid.’”

To some, the difference may seem minor. But to those who treat 1984’s “Karate Kid” as a classic –- including star Ralph Macchio himself -– a name like “Kung Fu Kid” might signal a welcomed desire by the film to stand on its own merits.

“It’s a totally different story; a totally different story,” Chan insisted, arguing that the movie is not a strict remake. “I was in China, Jaden [Smith] was all the way from America. [The family moves] to China, then they see me, then it’s [about] how I teach him martial arts.”

Of course, one of the many reasons why the movie is interesting is because it’s produced by Hollywood super-couple Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, and it stars their 11-year-old son Jaden (“The Pursuit of Happyness”) in the Macchio role. But according to Chan, he felt no pressure stepping into the mentor role that earned late actor Pat Morita an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Mr. Miyagi.

“No [I felt no pressure], not at all,” Chan insisted. “Really, we put a tribute [to Pat Morita] in the movie; I just do whatever I can.”

As for the key hallmarks of the original movie, Chan revealed two to us. “It’s different. We do have ‘wax on/wax off,’ but in a funny way. We’re not teaching him these kind of things,” he insisted.

And, when we asked him about the presence of Macchio’s signature crane kick move, Chan said that whatever the movie is called, the final battle scene will not involve it. “No, we don’t have those [scenes]. We show you… I don’t want to give it away. See you in June!”

What do you think? Should the movie stay close to the “Karate Kid” hallmarks, or stay as far away as possible?

As a ridiculous fan of the original Karate Kid, naturally I was extremely disheartened to learn that Hollywood was going to attempt a remake of the 1984 film about a whiny kid from New Jersey who moves to California and gets his ass kicked a handful of times before learning karate from some wacky old Asian handy man.
