Jackie Chan Unsure of ‘Karate Kid’ Remake Title, Reveals Fate Of ‘Wax On, Wax Off,’ The Crane Kick

Ever since the project was announced, movie fans have been clamoring for information about Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s remake of an Eighties classic. Now, we’ve seen the first trailer and only five months remain until release, but even the film’s new Mr. Miyagi isn’t quite sure what to call it.

“We just finished the movie, ‘Karate Kid,’” Jackie Chan told me Wednesday at the People’s Choice Awards. “Um, the ‘Kung Fu Kid.’”

Say what? Over the course of the film’s shooting, rumors had leaked that since the film is set in China, the title would reference Kung Fu (a Chinese discipline) instead of karate (a Japanese form of martial arts). But the recent first trailer for the movie ended with a title card that read “The Karate Kid.” Which seems odd, since technically Jaden Smith won’t be doing any karate in the movie.

“I don’t know [what it’s going to be called],” Chan admitted of the film, which is due to hit theaters in June. “Probably ‘Kung Fu Kid’ in China and ‘Karate Kid’ in America. Maybe a different title? I don’t know. But mostly we’ve called it ‘The Kung Fu Kid.’”

To some, the difference may seem minor. But to those who treat 1984’s “Karate Kid” as a classic –- including star Ralph Macchio himself -– a name like “Kung Fu Kid” might signal a welcomed desire by the film to stand on its own merits.

“It’s a totally different story; a totally different story,” Chan insisted, arguing that the movie is not a strict remake. “I was in China, Jaden [Smith] was all the way from America. [The family moves] to China, then they see me, then it’s [about] how I teach him martial arts.”

Of course, one of the many reasons why the movie is interesting is because it’s produced by Hollywood super-couple Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, and it stars their 11-year-old son Jaden (“The Pursuit of Happyness”) in the Macchio role. But according to Chan, he felt no pressure stepping into the mentor role that earned late actor Pat Morita an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Mr. Miyagi.

“No [I felt no pressure], not at all,” Chan insisted. “Really, we put a tribute [to Pat Morita] in the movie; I just do whatever I can.”

As for the key hallmarks of the original movie, Chan revealed two to us. “It’s different. We do have ‘wax on/wax off,’ but in a funny way. We’re not teaching him these kind of things,” he insisted.

And, when we asked him about the presence of Macchio’s signature crane kick move, Chan said that whatever the movie is called, the final battle scene will not involve it. “No, we don’t have those [scenes]. We show you… I don’t want to give it away. See you in June!”

What do you think? Should the movie stay close to the “Karate Kid” hallmarks, or stay as far away as possible?

Jackie Chan Joins ‘The Karate Kid’ In The Mr. Miyagi Role

Jackie ChanI wonder what the modern-day, Jackie Chan equivalent of “wax on, wax off” will be. I’m sure it will in some way involve comic tumbling on the level of slapstick.

Variety reports that Jackie Chan has joined the cast of the upcoming “Karate Kid” remake/reboot/return/recall/re-whatever. The project, titled “Kung Fu Kid,” is an update of the Ralph Macchio/Pat Morita-led 80s classic set in modern-day Beijing. Already confirmed to be stepping into the youthful starring role once occupied by Macchio is Jaden Smith, son of Hollywood stars Will and Jada Pinkett. Chan will play Morita’s wizened sensei, who teaches his pupil the ancient art of self-defense through everyday activities.

“Kung Fu Kid” is a joint Hollywood/China Film Group venture. The Chan news comes by way of an interview that CFG spokesman Weng Li gave to The Associated Press. The “Kid” shoot got underway on Saturday, kicking off with a traditional Chinese ceremony. The senior Smith, who is producing, along with Chan, director Harold Zwart (”The Pink Panther 2″) and others removed pieces of red cloth from a covered camera.

I’m feeling a little bit unsure about this project. Okay, more than a little bit. “The Karate Kid” is a classic in many ways and to many people. It makes a certain amount of business sense to raise the spectres of Macchio and Morita for “Kung Fu Kid,” but I can’t imagine I’m alone in being a fan of the original who is turned off by such an apparently blatant effort to curry fan favor. I’d much prefer to see this movie as a work inspired by “The Karate Kid,” which is what it sounds like anyway.

What do you think? Is Chan a good stand-in for Morita? Are you more interested in this project because of its “remake” status, or less interested? Were you a fan of the original “Karate Kid”?

Poll: Does Jaden Smith, "Kung Fu Kid" Sound Better?

From the get-go, the new Karate Kid film was going to be different. Ralph Macchio was traded in for Jaden Smith. Then Mr. Miyagi was traded in for Jackie Chan, thrusting the project into a more kung fu state of mind. And now, well, it sounds like Columbia Pictures is listening.

According to an interview with 3 News (toward the end of the interview), the film is no longer called Karate Kid — Chan says it’s now Kung Fu Kid. Jaden Smith’s ‘Karate Kid’ Remake Casts Jackie Chan As Mr. Miyagi

Chris Tucker and Jackie Chain in 'Rush Hour 3’You have to hand it to the producers remaking “The Karate Kid.” If there’s a way to replace the gentle, iconic Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi, it’s to cast bigger and more manic — and that’s just what they’ve done. According to Variety, “Rush Hour” star Jackie Chan is in final negotiations to train Jaden Smith in the delicate art of the crane kick.

The casting of Chan (as well as the Beijing location) really does indicate what big and flashy direction the remake intends to go in.

They’ve also hired a director. Harald Zwart (”The Pink Panther 2’) will direct the film. The film will begin shooting early this summer in Beijing, and will obviously keep the original character names as well as the storyline.

The casting of Chan (as well as the Beijing location) really does indicate what big and flashy direction the remake intends to go in. While the original wasn’t Shakespeare, it’s charm was really its 80s simplicity — and it’s that angle that managed to earn Pat Morita a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 1985. (Hey, the Academy was really big fans of the “wax on, wax off” philosophy.)

I can’t say I ever held out hope for this remake, but with all due respect to the Smiths and to Chan, every announcement from its production just stresseshow silly this project really is.

MTV readers, am I wrong — do you think The Karate Kid remake is a fantastic idea, particularly now that Chan has come aboard? Or do you think the 80s classic needs to be left alone?
