Their Best Role: Adam Sandler

Every summer Adam Sandler and I have a little ritual. He makes a new movie, and I get myself secretly excited that somehow, in some small way, he will be able to tap into the greatness he found in his best role, eight years ago. And each summer there are moments, small glimpses, proof that he could do it again, but he somehow refuses. His best role is an obvious choice: as Barry Egan in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love (2002), because it’s the only choice. And whatever he did to get there must have been too much work, too frightening, or cost too much.

Before 2002, Adam Sandler was a cult hero to teenage males and frat boys, and hardly anyone took him seriously, except possibly as an investment on another highly successful comedy. Movie critics certainly would never have admitted to liking him. (I’m personally rather fond of Michael Lehmann’s Airheads, however.) I suspect that the critically panned Happy Gilmore (1996) has become a favorite in retrospect, known primarily for Sandler’s golf course fight with Bob Barker. It’s an interesting movie in many ways, because it establishes Sandler’s comic persona. He plays a failed hockey player who lives with his grandma. He loves her dearly, and treats her with kindness and respect, without a hint of irony. But when he gets on the golf course, he explodes, and his outrageous temper makes him do funny things. That movie wasn’t clever enough to really tie together the two sides, or to do anything interesting with the plot, but it was a start.

The Masters Continue Today, And Here Are Some Golf Movies To Pass The Time With!

“Golf… golf… what kinda name is golf anyway? Sounds like a sound you make when you’ve got something caught in your throat.”
–Randy Quaid, “Caddyshack II”

Leave it to “Caddyshack II” star Randy Quaid to sum up one of the all-time great sports in such an eloquent fashion. Joking aside, it’s a wonderful time for golf enthusiasts everywhere as the 2010 Masters Tournament is currently underway. The leaderboard is filling up, Tiger Woods is back on the course and viewers at home are wondering exactly how everything is going to play out.

Luckily, there are some golf tournaments out there that don’t require weeks of waiting to determine the final outcome — as long as you have a video player and two hours to spare, you can devour these five fictional competitions from the comfort of your own home!

Caddyshack: As if that initial Quaid quote didn’t give it away, the “Caddyshack” films — yes, both of them — are two of the greatest golf movies of all time. It’s hard to go wrong with a 1980s Harold Ramis-directed feature, but it’s even more difficult when you have an all-star lineup like Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray to back him up. The second film was memorable for different reasons, not the least of which being Quaid’s turn as Peter Blunt, a man who doesn’t need lawyers to scare you when he can threaten to eat your Golden Retriever.

Futurama: Into The Wild Green Yonder: Admittedly, this straight-to-DVD “Futurama” movie gets a place on the list thanks to the part it played in bringing the hilarious science fiction animated series back to life. In fact, in terms of golf movies, this isn’t a particularly great one — the whole point is that Leo Wong wants to build the universe’s largest miniature golf course, destroying a good chunk of galaxy and causing other sorts of chaos in the process. But hey, Bender on an intergalactic golf course. That’s a high concept I can get behind.

The Greatest Game Ever Played: The true story of amateur golfer Francis Ouimet, “The Greatest Game Ever Played” really refers to one of the great underdog stories of all time. Shia LaBeouf plays Ouimet, a youth with virtually no shot at competing against professional golfers in the 1913 U.S. Open — but despite all odds, Ouimet not only performed, he actually won the tournament.

Happy Gilmore: Adam Sandler fans are often divided into two camps: those who liked “Billy Madison” more, and those who liked “Happy Gilmore” more. I certainly love them both, but it’s impossible to deny the charm of “Gilmore” when you’ve got the wonderful Carl Weathers as Chubbs Peterson and the hilarious villainy of Christopher McDonald’s Shooter McGavin, not to mention Ben Stiller’s all-too-cruel orderly. I still laugh every single time I think about the Mister Mister Lady.

The Legend of Bagger Vance: Robert Redford, Will Smith, Matt Damon and Charlize Theron — with such a talented quartet on hand, “The Legend of Bagger Vance” could have been about a legendary garbage man and it would probably be compelling. As great as the golf scenes are, the real winner for me is Jack Lemmon’s performance as an elderly Hardy Greaves, Vance’s former caddy. It was Lemmon’s final role before dying in 2001.

Poll: Did You Like The 3D Superbowl Movie Commercials?

Prior to this year’s Superbowl, a lot was said about the special 3D movie promo for Dreamworks’ Monsters vs. Aliens. Not only was it making TV history, but it was the only commercial I ever planned ahead to watch — going so far as to track down special glasses to wear while it was on my television. But was it worth it? The two 3D commercials aired right at the end of the second quarter, and the group at my apartment really enjoyed the experience, even if we weren’t exactly dealing with new technology.

Was the 3D unbelievably awesome? No. But for folks who weren’t even expecting that sort of interactive experience during the big game, they seemed to really like it. Discuss: Your Favorite Super Bowl Movie Promos (?)

You know how all the movie geeks get all giddy and gooey every time the Super Bowl draws near? It’s not because those guys like sports, believe me. (Movie nerds are actually SCARED of spectator sports. Yeah, I said it.) The reason is obvious: The Super Bowl always delivers lots of brand-new, mega-pricey, and occasionally effective TV commercials, and movie promos are always part of the mix.

This year, for example, we’re all a-geeked about “all-new” films like Transformers 2, Star Trek, G.I. Joe, Land of the Lost, and Wild Hogs 2: Domestic Morons. (Just kidding about that last one. Good title though.) And that got me to thinking about the exceedingly transitional nature of this mini nerd-in. For example … can anyone recall which Super Bowl movie ads they were pumped for in 2002? 1998? 1983? Lord knows I can’t — and I’ve been a movie-geek sports nut since, well, about 1983.

But a movie blog would be remiss for letting such a marketing day flit by without a discussion post. An Open Letter to the Three Jerks Who Sat Behind Me at the Movies Yesterday

Dear jerks,

I totally get that you, a middle-aged couple and their rotten little 13-year-old, spike-faced offspring, just HAD to go see The Uninvited at 4:50 on opening day at the AMC Franklin Mills 24 theater … but why did they have to be so stunningly obnoxious about the whole excursion?

You’re probably wondering what made me so angry, so because you’re unbelievably stupid, I’ll tell you: Your loud wife and snotty teen felt the need to pretty much NARRATE the entire prologue of the film, which is clearly a dream sequence and therefore not beholden to logic. Your repeated queries of “Huh?” and “What’s goin’ ON?” were not answered by the giant movie screen, and so you replaced your questions with simple assertions.

“That’s creepy,” is what I hear when a shadow moves across the screen. “That bikini is pretty small,” you helpfully inform me when a girl in the film appears wearing a bikini. But you took that as a challenge to be subtle.

Zack and Miri Make a Plahblahblah

Zack and Miri Make a Movie
Zack and Miri Make a Wholesome Film About Furthering the Population
Zack and Miri Make a Naughty Movie

None of those have the same ring as Zack and Miri Make a Porno, do they? Since the film has come, lathered the world in posters and buzz, and faded away, you’d think the title brou-ha-ha would be over now. Not so fast. Since Kevin Smith’s latest is about to hit DVD shelves on February 3, a new controversy is brewing.

Canoe reports that Wal-Mart is getting all nervous-like abut the title. Smith says that they want him to remove the word from the cover of the DVD, and he has complied with the request. (Hey, times are rough, a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.) But as he so rightly worries: What happens when one of the unsuspecting few buy it and then get the rude awakening of a movie alllll about sex and porn? As Smith told Erik last year: “By calling it Zack and Miri Make a Porno, you’re drawing a line in the sand that kinda says, anyone who’s remotely interested in a movie like that with that title, come on in. If you’re offended by the word porno, stay the f*ck away. This ain’t for you.”

I do hope that some unsuspecting people buy it, see it, and get ticked off. It’s ridiculous to say that the film is okay for the shelves, but only if the title is changed — who cares if it misleads people? I’d think that they’d rather have the random few brassed off about the title, than customers buy it thinking it’s a wholesome romance and then getting a rude awakening. Can you imagine if they made it all the way to Mewes’ final scene?
