It’s a question that has plagued TV-lovers for generations: what happens to all those canceled TV shows and their beloved characters when they vanish into pop culture oblivion? These days, they’re either relegated to DVD box sets or — if they’re lucky — they move on up to the big screen. To see a show that you’ve loved and lost make it to into movie form is pretty much every fan’s dream. So long as it’s done right.
I get why fans of the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” TV series have been up in arms since news broke that the franchise will make its way to theaters without the help of show creator Josh Weldon. The news kind of sucks for “Buffy” fans, but it got me thinking of all the other shows I love and miss.
Sure, we’re aware that the Buffy movie will draw inspiration from the 1992 film and not Whedon’s series, but since a movie-turned-TV show-turned movie list would get a little too complicated, we’re fudging the facts a bit. Besides, why should Buffy fans have all the fun? Here’s a roundup of five other small screen gems we’d like to one day see on the big screen.
“Arrested Development”
This one has been a long time coming. Rumblings of an “Arrested Development” reunion ran rampant ever since the series aired its last original episode. It was a little touch-and-go there for awhile (what was with the holdup Michael Cera!?) but don’t worry “Arrested” fans, the Bluths will be back. Yes, the long awaited big screen revamp of everyone’s favorite cancelled comedy is definitely happening. MTV News got the scoop from Ron Howard himself. We still don’t know which cast members are officially signed on for the film but one thing’s certain: hilarity is sure to ensue.
“Veronica Mars”
Most “Veroncia Mars” fans think this teen sleuth series got the boot from the WB way before its time and they’ve been campaigning for a theatrical revamp ever since. When we caught up with Kristin Bell back in February, the show’s leading lady promised that she and show creator Rob Thomas were “trying to make it happen.” It’s not looking good though. The most recent news is that Thomas and Warner Bros are in movie-making limbo and the chances Bell will get to re-visit her spunky detective roots have become pretty slim. But keep your fingers crossed “VM” fans!
“Gilmore Girls”
I don’t know about you but I couldn’t get enough of the fast talking mother/daughter duo that was Rory and Lorelai Gilmore. Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham gave fans seven glorious seasons of life lessons, random pop culture references (remember that Norman Mailer cameo?) and witty banter. Milo Ventimiglia, now of “Heroes” fame, must come back as bad boy Jess and ditto to Jared Padalecki as good guy Dean. Most importantly, a “Gilmore Girls” movie adaptation could finally make up for the lackluster series finale that fans were left with. Please give us a chance to crawl out of our depressing holes of “Gilmore” withdrawal for 90 minutes. Please.
“Friends”
Tired of “Friends” reruns? Yeah, me neither. It would still be pretty awesome to get some new material from the gang though. Jennifer Aniston recently hinted at a “Friends” reunion during the press tour for “Management.” Let’s face it, other than pairing up with “High School Musical” alumni — Lisa Kudrow will star in “Bandslam” with Vanessa Hudgens and Matthew Perry just teamed up with Zac Efron for “17 Again” — the rest of the cast can surely make time in their schedules to give us fans a much-needed “Friends” movie fix.
“Dark Angel”
It was the cult hit that introduced the world to Jessica Alba. Thanks for that, “Dark Angel.” The show about a genetically-enhanced bike messenger fighting evil in the post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest has been unjustly slept on. Bring back creator James Cameron as the film’s director and we’ve got ourselves a hit. After he finishes “Avatar” of course. Sure, a movie would force real-life ex’s Alba and Michael Weatherly to work together again but it would be totally worth it for us fans. I’ll even go out on a limb and say that this show is Alba’s best work to date — sorry “Fanastic Four” lovers but Max Guevera could totally kick Sue Storm’s ass.
