‘Fantastic Four’ To Get the Reboot?

Hollywood’s favorite new word is “reboot.” I’m not sure why it’s preferable to “remake” except that it has a technological ring to it, and implies that our movie memories will be erased as easily as our computer hard drives.

Comic book franchises is where the “rebooting” really seems to be happening (which is no surprise, considering the “retcon” was invented by comic books), with the Hulk undergoing the first treatment, Superman confirmed to be next, and Daredevil in rumor stage.

According to IESB.net, Fox is now looking to give the Fantastic Four the reboot. They want a whole new cast , and a whole new approach, specifically one that’s a little more edgy. They want less bubble gum and more Iron Man. Of course, it’s all rumor at this point, but the rumors proved true when it came to Superman and Daredevil, so I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if we get an official announcement.

I guess the biggest question is … should they? I’m still in favor of redoing Daredevil, but now the rush to remake history is feeling rather ridiculous. Rise of the Silver Surfer just came out in 2007, might it not be better to let the foursome rest awhile, and see what fans start clamoring for? (I seem to remember they want the Silver Surfer, not more of the Four.)

Then again, if a version isn’t popular or definitive (does anyone really think Reed Richards and immediately picture Ioan Gruffudd?) does it really matter if you change the line-up so soon? But why this “reboot” drama? Why not just ease back into the series with a new cast and a new story arc, and simply pretend it’s the same comic book with a new artist?

Follow me on Twitter!

Cinematical Seven: Jason’s Greatest Kills

To commemorate the re-re-reawakening of good ol’ Jason Voorhees, I thought it’d be fun to toss out seven of my favorite kills from the hulking lunatic. And so I did. To find out if the new Friday the 13th has any kills worth considering, well, I guess you’ll have to buy a ticket. Or wait for the DVD. Or cable.

Mark (Friday the 13th Part 2) — This is where we learned that all bets were off: Not only would Jason gladly kill a good-looking handicapped guy who was about to get sexed up … but he’d also give the wheelchair-bound lothario one of the series’ most diabolical demises! Yep, poor Mark got a machete in the face before his wheelchair bounced (backwards!) down a giant staircase. Simple, creepy, effective.

Andy (Friday the 13th Part 3) — Why would a guy spend his after-sex time walking around on his hands? So that Jason can chop him (downward!) from the groin to the … I dunno really, but in a movie filled with cheesy FX and unconvincing kills, this one still comes off as impressively nasty. I was gonna go with “Jeff & Sandra’s post-coital dual-skewer” scene, but the MPAA gutted most of that creativity.

Jack (Friday the 13th) — Most hardcore fans would probably pick Annie (nasty throat slice) or Marcie (axe to the face!), but there’s something about that hand popping up from beneath Kevin Bacon that always freaked me out. Plus the “arrow throat” gag works exceedingly well, whether you’re watching the American version or the slightly messier UK edition.

Steven Soderbergh On Casting Porn Star Sasha Grey For ‘The Girlfriend Experience’: ‘[She'll] Surprise People’

Sasha GreyThough Steven Soderbergh has featured unknown, untrained actors in his movies in the past, he has raised a number of eyebrows recently by casting porn star Sasha Grey in the lead of his forthcoming feature ‘The Girlfriend Experience.’ To be sure, Grey is certainly outside of the mainstream of Hollywood actors, but she certainly is famous and has had quite a bit of experience on camera. Does Soderbergh consider her to be a true amateur?

“No, of course not, but the key is dealing with people who haven’t learned anything about acting,” he recently told MTV News. “She’s not trained and that’s what I’m looking for. She’s going to surprise people. She’s great in the movie.”

So that’s good to know! But what is “The Girlfriend Experience,” anyway?

“I was working with Brian Koppelman and David Levine and we were in a bar and I saw this woman on the other end of the bar and something wasn’t fitting. Her affect, the way she was alone, there was something that just drew your eye. What was going on there? This is not typical. Brian and David both said “GFE,” and I said “What’s that?” And they explained the girlfriend experience. They explained this whole world of high end escorts wherein its not just a straight sexual thing. It’s almost like a full on fake relationship. You go out to dinner and you talk and if you saw a transcript of it you’d think these people are in a relationship. I was really intrigued by that and we whipped up a story, a week in the life of somebody who does this.”

Given that Grey is experienced in having sex on screen, was Soderbergh tempted to have the actress perform unsimulated sex acts in the movie? No, says the director. “I guess I felt like that’s been done. That boundary has been broken. I don’t want that to distract. But I was looking for someone who was comfortable in scenes that were sexual. There’s a scene early on where she’s watching a guy get undressed and she’s standing there. She’s almost undressed already and the look on her face is fantastic. I don’t know how to describe it. She is absolutely in her element. That only comes from being in situations like that and being in control. She looks comfortable and in control. You can see it on her face. Its kind of awesome.”

Are you willing to give Sasha Grey a chance to break into mainstream? Does the film sound interesting on its merits?
