Hurricane Earl, Trapped Chilean Miners And The U.S. Open In Today’s Twitter-Wood

Michael Ian Black may not work for the U.S. government, but if he did, he knows what he would want to name the next hurricane that shows up, and he thinks that Hurricane Earl is far too tame of a title. Marlon Wayans had disasters on his mind, too, and sent some sleepless Twitter love out to Pakistan and the miners trapped in Chile.

‘THE LAST EXORCISM’ GUEST BLOG: Eli Roth Details The Last Days Before Release

Here we are with the final guest blog for “The Last Exorcism” from producer Eli Roth. It’s been a fantastic week of coverage for a movie that more than deserves it. There have been some really smart films this summer and this one is no exception, but it’s far more than just a cherry on top. No one sells it better than Eli himself, so read on to hear about the exciting final days leading to today’s release. And seriously, make sure you check out the movie this weekend– it’s well worth your time.

by Eli Roth

Once Lionsgate bought the film, I noticed something strange on that release date. Why was August 27th so familiar…? Oh, yes, I know: because my friend Alex Aja’s film “Piranha 3D” is opening the same day, which I have a cameo in. This put me in a very odd position. I’m friends with all the “Piranha” people, and I want their film to be a big hit, but putting us on the same release date puts “The Last Exorcism” in direct competition, and could split the horror fan base.

Lionsgate understood, they had taken this into consideration, but they also had statistics for many weekends where two horror films opened and both did fine. I called Alex Aja and he totally understood that I had nothing to do with choosing the date, it just worked best in Lionsgate’s release schedule. “The Expendables” took Friday August 13th well before they had bought our film, and they had movies booked up already for the fall, so this was the best date for everyone. Eventually “Piranha 3D” moved a week earlier, and we all breathed a sigh of relief, but it was mainly because of the availability of 3D screens in the marketplace.

The next step was the rating. When Lionsgate bought the film, they said that if the MPAA wanted us to cut out or water down the scariest parts to get a PG-13 they’d release the film rated R. We never shot the film with a rating in mind, we always just did what was best for the story. Because the film takes place around a religious southern family, there was no swearing. It felt out of character for many of the people in the film. There’s also not a lot of violence, and certainly no more than in a film like “Cloverfield” or “The Ring” or “The Grudge.”

We submitted the film and when it came back PG-13, we felt it was the right rating. I think with an R rating and my name on it people would come out of the movie saying “I thought it would be gorier.” With PG-13 people come out very scared, but really focus on the performances, which is what we want. It sets up the right expectations for what people are going to experience. Also, if you’re going to make your film rated R, take full advantage of the rating, like “Piranha 3D.”

I was never against PG-13 movies, but was VERY against movies that should have been R that were castrated to PG-13 to “reach a wider audience.” You should never take out the very thing people want to fit a rating, but in this case what people are coming to see is a scary, psychological possession story, not endless gore, so it made sense. People will often say that there’s no such thing as a scary PG-13 horror film, at which point I remind them that “Jaws” was rated PG, and many people consider that film the scariest of all time.

Once we have our rating, that dictates how we can do our marketing. With an R rated film you have many more restrictions on where you can place your trailer. Tim Palen, the marketing head at Lionsgate, cut an amazing, amazing trailer, which we were able to get placed on “Inception” and “Salt.”

Trailer placement is a huge, huge deal. Think of it this way: everyone’s fighting to get on the big summer movies, and those slots are going to go to other movies the studio already has. But the theaters have a say as well, so that first weekend “Inception” opened, people started tweeting about the film. Not only that, we were attached to the negative of “The Expendables,” which turned out to be a huge late summer hit, as we all hoped it would be.

Suddenly we were everywhere. I saw very directly the effect twitter had on “Inglourious Basterds.” That opening weekend something like 78% of the tweets were about “Basterds.” Word of mouth and that first initial reaction is so hugely important on a horror film, that at our world premiere at the Los Angeles film festival in June I asked the fans to please tweet if they liked it. We had spent 3 years making it, so if they could take 30 seconds, it would make a huge difference. And it did.

Suddenly newspaper, magazine and television entertainment outlets were asking to see the film, and Lionsgate was able to now start to propel the film and set up screenings everywhere. Keep this in mind — just because you have a movie in theaters there’s no guarantee news outlets are going to cover it.

When you have a film without big name stars you have to give them a reason, and very often the reason is the actor’s standout performances, which we have. Ashley Bell is so good in the film I’m starting to see articles talking about Oscar buzz surrounding her. I know it’s early, but the fact it’s even being talked about in a minor way is a great indicator of how people respond to her in the film.

Patrick Fabian is so spectacular as the reverend people are coming out of the movie not only saying “Who is this guy and why haven’t we seen him before?” but are also saying it’s been years since they’ve seen acting this superb in a horror film. Ashley did everything with zero makeup, as Daniel Stamm wrote in his blog, so what you’re seeing is the raw film with no CGI alteration. It’s very, very scary.

We had several other screenings, one at Comic Con which was really fun, where I did my first Q&A with Daniel Stamm and producer Eric Newman. The fans really got the movie, and loved that it was different, well acted and, most importantly, smart.

As we got closer to release, my publicity ramped up. I did my first appearance on “The Tonight Show.” I went back on Chelsea Lately, which is always fun. And I went with Daniel to different screenings around the country, from Toronto to New York down to the blazing heat of Austin, Texas.

All over we got the most incredible responses from fans. People were definitely split on the ending – some love it, some hate it, but overall people really loved the film in ways they did not expect. And then, just as the commercials started ramping up, Lionsgate came out with what I consider to be the most genius promotion they’ve ever done: the Chatroulette video.

Back in May, we had a big marketing meeting at Lionsgate and went over all the different ideas for the campaign. They are so, so, so good at Lionsgate at marketing these movies. They really understand the fans, and pitched all kinds of fun promotions. One of them was this chatroulette video of a girl about to strip, but then she turns demonic and possessed and we filmed the reactions.

I thought it sounded fun, but it was very dependent on how people responded to the girl. I remember opening up the video at Newark Airport, and literally screaming out loud laughing. It was the most simple, effective and brilliant use of viral marketing I had seen in years. It was inspired.

Lionsgate launched the video that night, and two days later there were over a million views. By opening day there are well over 2 million. Suddenly EVERYONE was talking about the video. Friends were getting sent the video by everyone they knew — and people were watching it over and over and over. We had done it. We became the zeitgeist.

Suddenly everyone wanted to do interviews, and what started as a mini half-press day this week turned into a full blown press day with over a hundred interviews crammed into 7 hours. My amount of interviews tripled, and I swear it was because of that video. It just made the movie look smart, clever and fun, which I am proud to say it is. Now that we had everyone’s attention, we began to focus on making people aware of the Thursday midnight shows.

Earlier this summer I went to the first midnight show of “Eclipse,” and every single screen was sold out. It was insane. Even if you weren’t into “Twilight,” you couldn’t help but have fun. It was just infectious.

I called Lionsgate the next day and said that of all the other films being released this summer, we were the most conducive to a midnight show. We just tagged the trailers “Special midnight shows Thursday.” We did a promotion with AMC cinemas to get the word out, and at first I was going to fly to another city, but so many interviews came up in Los Angeles I had to stay local. I went to the AMC Burank 16 theater, where I went opening night of “Cabin Fever” eight years ago, and what I saw was beyond belief.

I had never seen a crowd like that. By the time I showed up they had sold out the midnight show, added a 2nd, sold that show out and had added a third. The line went on and on and on and on. Then I heard from Patrick Fabian in Long Beach: Sold Out. Ashley Bell at The Bridge near LAX: Sold Out. A second show added: Sold Out. Eric Newman was at Arclight Hollywood: sold out. A second show added: sold out.

It was what we had dreamed of all those years ago. I introduced all the screenings, told some stories, took tons of photos and signed autographs. The movies started and I theater-hopped listening to the very, very vocal reactions.

Then we started getting reports about the east coast: we sold out midnight shows in New York, New Jersey, Texas… it wasn’t just local. Eli Roth Talks ‘The Last Exorcism,’ ‘Funhouse’ Plans And More In Today’s Twitterview!

The Last Exorcism” hits theaters today. Make sure you see it this weekend. I independently decided to devote a week of coverage to it after I saw and was floored by it. If you think the subject of exorcism can’t be topped after “The Exorcist”… well, I’m not going to say “The Last Exorcism” is better. Time and public opinion will decide that. But it’s a fantastic film, with a wonderfully twisted and twisting story, great performances and an insanely creepy atmosphere, all of it accomplished with minimal gore and special effects.

To help us cap off this week of coverage, producer Eli Roth sat down with MTV Movies Blog on Twitter today to take some questions from us and from fans about the movie and about his work as a whole. ELI ROTH: TWITTERCAST STARTS NOW! #EliMTV

MTV MOVIES BLOG: Good morning @eliroth! Thanks for participating in this Twitterview with us! And away we go…. What’s next? “This” obviously being “The Last Exorcism” — but you readers ought to know that!

ELI: Absolutely! I get great satisfaction from all sides of the camera. In front, behind, and next to it. Next is a remake of “Funhouse” in 3D which the #LastExorcism writers Huck and Andrew are writing, and RZA’s movie “The Man With the Iron Fists” which we wrote together and that he’s directing and starring in. It’s really fun.

MTV: When was it decided to change the title of this week’s movie from ‘Cotton’ to ‘The Last Exorcism’ and why?

ELI: The Very original title was “The Ivanwood Exorcism.” We liked “Cotton” because it was mysterious and simple, but it confused a lot of buyers. It takes a lot of explaining. And then in editing we came up with “The Last Exorcism” because it really is supposed to be the last one he’ll ever do. I liked the evil connotations.

MTV: Why do you think the teaser was so popular among foreign buyers and what is the film’s big appeal for a European market?

ELI: Exorcism and possession is something that’s done in every religion and every culture. Haunting in CT was called “Exorcism in CT” in Spain. Religion and the devil is something that touches every culture, and they liked the idea of me doing a film in that space.

MTV: Have you ever witnessed a real-life possession or some other supernatural event?

ELI: I had an ex-girlfriend who went psycho and started attacking me and hitting me out of nowhere. That count?

ELI: My favorite horror movie of all time is “The Mirror Has Two Faces.” I am in it as the Worst Extra Ever in Cinema.

MTV: Everyone was great, but Patrick [Fabian] and Ashley [Bell] really stand out. Do you have plans to work with them again?

ELI: I’d love to! I love all the buzz on the acting. There are already internet articles saying Oscar Buzz for them.

MTV: [Twitter user @Barbzilla00 asked "..Anything weird happen on the set during the making of the film?"]

If there’s one thing that binds the best exorcism films, it’s that the really good ones all offer some great acting. The major players in The Exorcist give amazing performances, The Exorcism of Emily Rose is believable through the work of its solid ensemble, and, now, The Last Exorcism delivers a potentially star-making performance from Patrick Fabian. ‘THE LAST EXORCISM’ GUEST BLOG: Director Daniel Stamm Shares Stories From The Set

Our week-long focus on “The Last Exorcism” continues today with another guest blog, this time from director Daniel Stamm. As we learned from producer Eli Roth in yesterday’s post, he took a very hands-off approach during the production, the better to give Stamm the breathing room to really put his flavor on the film. The result is quite powerful, as you’ll see when the movie opens tomorrow. Make sure you come back tomorrow as well, for Eli’s second guest blog as well as his Twitterview, which is happening at 11:30am eastern.

by Daniel Stamm

In film school they teach you the importance of vision and preparation. Certainly good things to pack when making a film. They are heavy things to carry around, though, and they can make it hard to move. What making “The Last Exorcism” taught me was to readily abandon it all if necessary and go with what feels right in the moment.

There are so many people involved in making a movie that whatever your initial vision is won’t make it through the process in one piece anyway. After every creative meeting with your producers and heads of departments you are picking up the pieces and gluing them back together. If you are working with smart people -– like I was lucky to -– the result is better than what you walked in with round after round.

So when you finally emerge from this process and start pre-production, it will probably have left its mark on you in one of two ways. You are either a) done compromising and eager to finally be in control of the whole damn thing or b) addicted to the process of rolling with the punches and constantly adjusting what you’re going after. I feel both are legitimate and probably come down to personality.

For myself I have found that the documentary style “The Last Exorcism” was shot in really lends itself to the latter. The focus being on the actors and the storytelling rather than on the technical side of making a film allows you to react to changes in a way that a huge studio production might not. A lot of moments in the film just ‘happened into existence’ that way. Here are three examples:

– When we were auditioning actors for the role of our protagonist, Patrick Fabian improvised a four-minute-long flawless sermon. I asked him if we could go again and do it in half the time. What I meant was for him to cut the content in half. Instead he didn’t cut a word – he just talked twice as fast. My little brain couldn’t keep up. I had no idea what he was talking about but his sermon had this energy that made me want to stand up and cheer. Not only did I know that I had found my lead, it also inspired one of the scenes in the film that define this character best: him making a bet that he can preach about his mom’s banana bread recipe and still get a hallelujah out of his congregation.

- There is an equally character-defining moment for the afflicted girl in the script, and that wasn’t planned either. In the script she was barefoot throughout much of the story. When we found our location, a deserted plantation near New Orleans, we knew that this would be a problem. There was no way we could have actress Ashley Bell run around barefoot on splintery floorboards and through high grass. The risk of injury was too high, no insurance would have covered it. So we had to put shoes on her feet and somehow motivate that she never took them off, not even at night. My ex-girlfriend always wore red Doc Martens that I loved. We decided to have a character in the film give them to the girl as a present, and for her to be so overjoyed that she refuses to take them off again. Ashley Bell performs that moment in a way that the audience can’t help but fall in love with her – which the entire rest of the movie builds on.

- The night before we were to shoot the exorcism scene, Ashley and I were talking in the hotel lobby. I asked her if there was anything she wanted to try during the scene. She said: “Why don’t I do this?”… and bent over backwards. I couldn’t believe it. Her head was almost reaching the floor. I had had no idea that she was double-jointed. I ran up to my room and threw out everything I had planned for the scene. The next morning we just put Ashley into a room with the camera. The outcome not only became the core of the movie but also the poster image Lionsgate would later base a marketing campaign on.

‘THE LAST EXORCISM’ GUEST BLOG: Eli Roth On How It All Came Together

I’m very pleased to share with you the first of three guest blogs coming this week in support of “The Last Exorcism,” which hits theaters this Friday. And that’s that. Take it away, Eli!

by Eli Roth

I’ve always loved exorcism movies, ever since “The Exorcist” traumatized me at the ripe age of 6. I saw that film and literally could not fall asleep for two years without believing the devil was going to possess me. My parents would argue that we were Jewish and that we didn’t believe in that stuff, but I was certain I would be the first test case. My father’s a psychiatrist/psychoanalyst and a professor at the Harvard Medical school, so any kind of altered personality was always approached from a psychiatric point of view in my home. Perhaps that’s the very thing that intrigued me about possession: the thought that maybe he’s wrong, and that another spirit can literally enter your body and take you over. And what if that spirit was none other than the devil himself?

Possession has influenced all my films in a strange way. “Cabin Fever” is very much a possession film, except the body is taken over by a flesh-eating disease. We had our start date, we were literally a day away from beginning prep, and then we lost our directors to their other film they had set up at Sony, “The Virginity Hit,” (which is hilarious, by the way, and comes out in September.) Suddenly, we were without a director.

I remember sitting in Berlin filming “Inglourious Basterds,” getting the phone call from Eric and Marc that we’d lost our directors. That’s never a fun call to get. There was brief discussion if I wanted to direct it, and as much as I loved the script, I felt that this was the true test of my abilities as a producer. If I’m a real producer, I should be able to get out there and find the best director for the project, and couldn’t get the reputation of being the default director if this happened again. We were determined to find someone who would make something better than any of us ever imagined.

We began a frantic search, and soon Eric and Marc saw a very sick, twisted, and most importantly smart film by an A.F.I. grad named Daniel Stamm. His film, “A Necessary Death,” was made for $2,000 over the course of three years, and was making its rounds on the film festival circuit to rave reviews. “A Necessary Death” won A.F.I. fest, so they met with him in Los Angeles, while I watched the film in Berlin.

I still remember sitting in my small room at Babelsberg Studio, dressed in my 1920’s “Basterds” tuxedo, with my eyes glued to the screen. His film was so smart, so well-acted and so damn creepy I knew he had the right sensibility for the job. We set up a call and talked at length. I loved Daniel’s approach to the film. He said he wasn’t out to make a scary movie, he wanted to tell the story of this character, and approach it as a character piece, and let the horror come from the reality of the situation. I once had a lengthy conversation with William Friedkin about “The Exorcist” and told him it was my favorite horror film of all time. He looked at me and said “I didn’t make a horror film. I made a drama. It just happened to be horrific.” When Daniel said that we hired him on the spot.

During the production I kept my distance, because I knew my presence would be something of a distraction. I wanted Daniel to feel that I was there to support him, and that this was truly his film, and that I’m there if he needed me. I watched over the casting tapes with the other producers, but Daniel ran all the auditions, scouted the locations and put together his key creative team. Because we were making the film independently we gave Daniel the freedom to choose whoever he wanted, and his key crew members from “A Necessary Death,” cinematographer Zoltan Honti and editor Shilpa Khanna, came on board.

When it came time to film, it just so happened that I was in Cannes for the premiere of “Inglourious Basterds.” At Cannes, simultaneous to the film festival is the film market, where sales companies sell films to foreign territories all over the world. Daniel was in Louisiana prepping the film, and I told him everyone’s question after they read the script was “Who’s the girl? How will the possession look?” Daniel and Ashley shot a 1 minute teaser with Ashley possessed, and it was brilliant.

StudioCanal and I showed this teaser to the buyers in Cannes and they went crazy for it. In what was considered a dead market, suddenly we were the hot film foreign territories were buying. It also helped there were posters all over Cannes of me for “Inglorious Basterds,” so I was able to use that momentum to really get people to pull the trigger and buy the film for their country. With just a few territories we were fully financed.

I called Daniel and said “Don’t worry, we’re already in profit. But – you’re going to have a huge theatrical release in Italy so don’t f–k it up.” Daniel laughed, he couldn’t believe the film was already financed before we shot, but people believed in the team behind the project and loved what they saw of Ashley, so we were able to really just let them go wild and shoot the film however they wanted.

After Cannes I was tempted to go down to New Orleans for the end of the shoot, but by that point they had such a tight bond on set I didn’t want to disturb it. This is why it’s valuable to have such strong producing partners, which I did with Eric Newman, Marc Abraham and Tom Bliss — they could handle any problem that came up on set and made sure it was all running smoothly while I was in Europe. I had seen dailies online and was sending comments here and there, but mostly it was “Looks amazing! Keep shooting!”

Not only were Patrick and Ashley delivering powerhouse performances, but every other character, like Caleb and Louis and even the nurse at the hospital, were outstanding. Daniel let no one off the hook — he would do 30 or 40 takes if necessary to get the performance to feel totally natural. After the shoot I let Daniel and Shilpa work on the film until they were at a place where they needed our input, and we watched the film, made notes and they did another cut.

Eventually we found ourselves at a place where we could see what the film needed a little more of, so we wrote new scenes and shot them in one night outside Los Angeles. I was on set for those, and it was fun to actually see Daniel in action, and not just hear him as a voice from the dailies. I talked with him in depth about the scares and how I approach filming and editing them, having been down that road so many times in my other films. But he really had such a good sense of how to shoot it, there wasn’t much to say.

Back in the editing room, I went through the film with Daniel and Shilpa and was able to give a more objective opinion on any scenes they felt weren’t coming together the way we had planned. It’s normal for producers to give notes, they’re the ones you depend on to really identify potential story problems you might not see because you’re too close to it. Good producers never lie to you, but they also have ways of solving creative problems with you.

When I was in the editing room I wanted it to be the way it felt with Quentin in my editing room — someone I trust just trying to help make the film stronger in every way. Scary scenes are extremely tricky to cut. You can write it scary, shoot it scary, and somehow, in editing, it just doesn’t quite have the punch you thought it would. I had cut torture scenes in “Hostel” 50 different ways before I got it right, so I was able to help Daniel sort out any potential trouble spots he was having. Plus I was able to help show Daniel how to prep the film to sound mix in 7 days.

Most sound mixes will go for weeks, but we had one week. This requires tremendous preparation and having been through it at this pace before I knew it could be done, and helped guide him through at the pace I had done so that we could get all the sounds he had in his head in the mix. We finished the film just before Christmas, and it was then time to show it to distributors. We showed the film to Lionsgate, and they loved it so much they bought the movie and put it on the release slate for August 27th. We had done our jobs, and “The Last Exorcism,” was going to hit theaters.

Yesterday we had a great feature with comments from an actual demonologist about the realities of conducting an exorcism. What Are The Cheesiest Movies Ever Made?

Just before we begin I want to make very clear that at no point will I be making any jokes about movies that are ‘no Gouda’ or any other cheese related puns (if I can help it.) — and now that I got that off my chest I can get on with the business at hand. In honor of Piranha’s glorious return to theaters, Alexandre Aja’s remake of Joe Dante’s 1978 comedy-horror about a swarm of killer piranha has inspired the folks over at Wired to compile the 24 Cheesiest Sci-fi films of all time. It’s a comprehensive list that showcases the best of the worst in sci-fi — even if I disagree with their inclusion of Cloverfield among chessy classics like The Creeping Terror and Troll 2 (you can read the entire list here). But one of the advantages of my job is that I don’t have to rant and rave about someone else’s list, I can just make my own.

So what makes a move go from downright un-watchable to the elevated status of ‘cheese’? Well, it’s a personal choice, but for me the calling card of any cheesy classic is the feeling that everyone involved really seems to be trying to make great cinema, but either through a lack of budget or talent, you wind up with a movie that is so laughably awful or over the top that it becomes more than bad — it’s entered the great tradition of ‘Cinema Cheese’

Unless you’re new to these parts, you have probably noticed that I never like to play by the rules of a movie list, so I’m not going to confine myself to the world of sci-fi, because as we all know, cheesy movies come in all shapes and sizes.
