James Franco Will Saw Off His Own Arm

We’ve known for two months that Danny Boyle’s next film will be 127 Hours, based on the true story of a mountain climber who got stuck under a boulder and had to do terrible things to survive. And now we know which lucky (?) actor will play the guy: James Franco.

That’s the word from industry publication Production Weekly, which tweeted earlier today that Franco has the part, and that filming will begin in early March in Utah. The mountaineer, Aron Ralston, was climbing in southeastern Utah in 2003 when a boulder came loose and crushed his arm against the wall of the canyon, pinning him there for several days. Probably something like 125 or 130 hours total, I’m guessing. (You can read all the gruesome, bone-sawing details on Ralston’s Wikipedia page.) Anyway, while there are no specifics yet, one assumes Boyle will be shooting in the same general area where the incident happened, which isn’t too far from where John Ford used to shoot a lot of his Westerns.

The big question is how a film that is basically a one-man show — in which that one man is trapped under a rock most of the time — will be interesting to watch. Franco is a good actor, but does he have the intensity and charisma required to hold our attention when he’s the only person on the screen? A lot will probably depend on what the screenplay (which Boyle is writing with his Slumdog Millionaire collaborator, Simon Beaufoy) gives Franco to do while he’s lying there. If it involves a lot of grinning and squinting, perfect!

Terrific Trailers: 28 Days Later

Maybe it’s all the talk of Swine Flu flooding the airwaves that has me in a pandemic frame of mind, but when Erik asked us to think about some of our favorite summer movie trailers, my mind wandered from the obvious blockbusters and instead, I came up with Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later. Now, I’ve always been a staunch defender of 28 Days against what seemed to be a chorus of naysayers. Yes, I know; the theatrical ending is too upbeat (not for me, but I’ve got a pretty bleak outlook sometimes), it’s not a proper zombie film, Cillian Murphy’s ‘Rambo’ turn comes from left field, and the list goes on. As you may or may not already know, Boyle is keen on making a Trainspotting sequel (based on that book’s follow-up, Porno). However, because the film would have to take place roughly ten years after the events of the original, Boyle has insisted that he’d like to wait awhile to let the actors age. But here’s been the big question: While Boyle is down, would his original cast be back?

Here’s what Boyle had to say when I asked him just that: “Actually, I’ve got a bit of news on that one. We’ve had this plan for awhile now to make a film that’s generational; how they would be guys now who were clearly and visibly middle aged. Well, what’s just happened in Britain is that they’re preparing to release a new DVD of [Trainspotting], and they’ve done a series of interviews for the special features on the DVD … and good news is all the actors have come back to participate in these interviews. So I think that’s a sign that if we do get them looking right, they’ll be prepared to do it — that they’re getting to a point where they’re thinking, ‘Yeah, that could be interesting.’ Because everyone will have to be in the right frame of mind in order to do it; they need to age a bit still. I want them to feel different … and older.”

Boyle later told me that he does hope to eventually make the sequel one day. That, coupled with the news that the original cast have reunited for a new Trainspotting DVD, means another flick is most certainly in the cards.
