Pitch of the Day: Could There Be a ‘Hurt Locker 2′?

Now that The Hurt Locker has won Best Picture, I keep hearing both jokes and straight-faced inquiry about a Hurt Locker 2. But could it ever really happen? Should it ever really happen? Let’s forget that it’s not really common for Best Picture winners to spawn sequels — even those that make more than $1 billion. And let’s forget that The Hurt Locker is in fact the lowest grossing Best Picture of all time and therefore does not economically warrant a follow-up. Pretend The Hurt Locker earned as much as its biggest competitor, Avatar. What would the sequel look like?

Due to the way The Hurt Locker ends — and who is in that ending — I have trouble imagining anything other than the plot of Lost since the Season 3 finale (and no, I haven’t spoiled anything on either end there). Watch This: Trailer for Every Academy Award Winning Movie Ever

At one time, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to non-ironically adapt Ebert’s Bigger Little Movie Glossary into a screenplay. I wondered if the book of movie cliches, stereotypes, hackneyed formulas, etc. might actually be the perfect guide to constructing the most accessible — and therefore most popular — movie ever made. Or, it would be one of the biggest flops. Either way, it would be a neat exposure of how unoriginal most Hollywood movies are these days — and the unimaginative audiences who flock to and encourage them.

This fake trailer for a film titled “Movie Title” at Cracked.com is the closest thing I’ve seen to such an adaptation of Roger Ebert’s guide, though it specifically focuses on the cliches, stereotypes, hackneyed formulas, etc. of Academy Award winners. I’d say it’s more relevant to the term “Oscar bait” more than certain Oscar winners, but whatever the intent I found the parody hilarious.

I’m not alone in my laughter, either, but I might be alone in admitting I’d actually watch a feature length version of “Movie Title.” As someone who forgives expository dialogue at times, I actually loved the bare-faced lines in this video. Especially the simple, straightforward exchange, “‘My name.’ ‘My name.’ ‘Catch phrase!’” And the final admission of adding a final comedic moment to a trailer for a serious movie was so spot on.

Check out the trailer after the jump. And compare it to the films nominated for tonight’s Academy Awards.

Will One Email Dash the Hopes of ‘The Hurt Locker’?

The Hurt LockerThe case of The Hurt Locker producer Nicolas Chartier’s leaked email asking people to vote for Locker is another great reminder that nothing is private in the digital age. It’s not only a faux pas, it’s against the rules of the Academy. What will the repercussions be for The Hurt Locker, the excellent and edgy indie underdog underdog so many are rooting for? Which Oscar Movies Do You Have Left on Your List?

There are plenty of movies I don’t get a chance to see, due to the fact that I actually require sustenance and sleep. And, of course, now is the time when I will scramble to see them all, or at least the major contenders. Does Sci-Fi Stand A Chance at the Oscars?

For movie fans, the Academy Awards are kind of like the Superbowl. In the world of sports it all seems so simple: if you win, you get a spot in the championships.
