It looks like Paul Giamatti is facing a “Win Win” situation after all, as the actor has signed on to star in Tom McCarthy’s upcoming film for Fox Searchlight.
New York Magazine reports that Giamatti and Amy Ryan are joining “Win Win,” McCarthy’s newest project described by the magazine as “‘The Blind Side‘ for indie literary types.” The story centers on “a suburban New Jersey family and the teen runaway who changes their lives and turns around the sagging fortunes of a high school wrestling team.”
Giamatti previously mentioned his possible involvement in “Win Win,” though McCarthy’s publicist stated that it would be “premature” to say anything official about the casting at that time.
“Win Win” is the latest project for McCarthy, one of the hardest working guys in the filmmaking business. His directing credits include praised works such as “The Station Agent” and “The Visitor.” You’ve seen his face before on Fox’s long-canceled “Boston Public” and as the plagiarizing Baltimore Sun reporter in the final season of “The Wire.” He’s also nominated for an Academy Award for his story contributions to Pixar’s “Up.”
Of those projects, there isn’t a single clunker in the bunch, at least not in my opinion. When you combine that fact with the participation of talented actors like Giamatti and Ryan, it’s a sure bet that “Win Win” will live up to its title in the hearts and minds of moviegoers everywhere. Barring disaster, this should be a sweet little project to watch unfold.
