With most of the MTV Movies team on their way to San Diego and Comic-Con officially getting underway tomorrow, I figure I ought to show the annual geek gathering some love. So today’s post highlights the many different guides to getting the most out of the convention from Around the Blogosphere. There are a surprising number of niche-focused features, and I’ve tried to round most of those up along with a general breakdown or two. Even if, like me, you’re unable to attend this year, you can at least live vicariously through this guides. Woo.
– First up is a day-by-day breakdown of the essential panels to catch at SDCC, io9’s “Your Can’t-Miss-It Guide To Comic Con 2009!” My personal pick is the one for Mike Judge’s “Extract.” “Idiocracy” didn’t thrill me, but I grew up on “Beavis & Butthead.” Also, “Office Space” is one of the greatest comedies. Ever. (io9)
– I’m including this one for posterity. Awhile back, the Los Angeles Times ran a “Girls’ Guide to Comic Con 2009″ feature. It was not well received. MTV contributor Elisabeth Rappe certainly was not amused. What do you think? (Los Angeles Times)
– Maybe you’re a San Diego local, or you come from a family of people who are all interested in comics and geek culture. If you’re heading to the ‘Con with mom, dad, bro and sis in tow, check out this family guide to SDCC ‘09. (SDNN)
– Increasingly, video games are becoming an integral component of any large-scale geek culture gathering. I was amazed to see the presence game publishers had a New York City’s comic book convention earlier this year. So it comes as no surprise to find this gamer’s guide to SDCC ‘09. And from my pals at GameDaily no less! (GameDaily)
– There’s already a general guide to SDCC ‘09 up top, but this one’s got VIDEO! Everyone on the Internet loves video! (The Ugly Couch Show)
– When most people think comic books, one or two names come to mind: Marvel and DC. Sure, some will say Dark Horse, others Image and still others Top Cow. But Marvel and DC are the undisputed heavyweights. Here’s a feature that looks at SDCC ’09’s indies. (The Daily Cross Hatch)
– This last one is a bit offbeat. It’s a web series guide to SDCC ‘09. I mentioned above that people on the Internet love them some video. It’s true, they do. Just look at the popularity of “The Guild” or “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.” I’m honestly surprised to see how much SDCC content is web series-focused. Thankfully this guide runs through every bit of it. (Tubefilter)
