Happy post-Independence Day Monday! I hope you all had a restful long weekend. I wasn’t around on Thursday to wrap up last week’s poll, so let’s take a quick look at those numbers now.
“Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” edged out “Public Enemies” by a fairly hefty margin, with the 3-D animated family comedy taking 61% of your votes to the period gangster flick’s 37%. “Transformers” and its preceding summer pals have seemingly been kicked to the curb, as only 1% of you ventured forth to check out older releases. The limited release world was similarly uninspiring, also earning 1% of your love. At least you’re getting out of the house though! There weren’t even enough votes to earn “staying home and watching TV” a measly percentage point.
Now, let’s take a look at what this week has in store…
The big buzzer for the week is undoubtedly Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Brüno.” After the success of “Borat,” even a much-talked-about clipped scene featuring La Toya Jackson will probably not be enough to keep viewers from checking out who Cohen’s gay Austrian fashion reporter pisses off in his latest outing.
“Heroes” fans get their cheerleader fix this week, with Hayden Panettiere’s starring role in director Chris Columbus’s “I Love You, Beth Cooper.” The teen-friendly rom-com stars Panettiere as the hottest girl in her high school. Paul Rust plays a nerdy classmate with a crush. The two pair up and shenanigans ensue.
I’m guessing that this week’s rundown of limited release fun will inspire a few more indie outings from some of you. The star of the show is undoubtedly “Blood: The Last Vampire,” a live action adaptation of the well-regarded Japanese anime series. There’s also “Humpday,” a Sundance ‘09 buzzer starring Mark Duplass and Joshua Leonard as competitive hetero best friends who, on a dare, are forced to explore the homoerotic side of their relationship.
My personal pick for the week is “Soul Power.” The doc chronicles an epic-scale concert which was produced alongside the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. The variety show, known as Zaire ‘74 (for its location and date, ‘natch), featured performances from a number of the hottest talents at the time: B.B. King, Bill Withers, James Brown and many others. The trailer features gobs of live performance footage, including Brown at the height of his funk-fueled mayhem.
Enough from me. What is your pick for the week? Cast your vote and then share your thoughts in the comments below!
